Writing Center

Mission

The Writing Center offers feedback, coaching, resources, and encouragement to help both graduate and undergraduate students develop strong writing skills that will support their success at Missouri S&T and beyond.

Missouri S&T graduates report that writing and communication skills have been crucial to their professional success, but these skills cannot be learned in a single course or semester. Rather, writing and communications proficiency develop throughout a college career and over the course of a lifetime. The Writing Center is a resource for students throughout their writing and critical thinking processes, helping them with classroom writing assignments, job search documents, articles for publication, personal writing projects, and more.

Writing Consultations

Peer writing consultations are the heart of Writing Center services and a key part of the academic experience at Missouri S&T. Writing consultants are students who represent a wide range of majors. They have been identified by professors and Writing Center staff as among the best student writers on campus. Each consultant receives intensive and ongoing training to help other students become strong writers as well.

Many hundreds of students seek feedback from writing consultants each semester.  Consultants work individually with students on all types of documents, including essays, research papers, articles for publication, dissertations, laboratory reports, proposals, cover letters, and more. They help students at any stage of writing process, from understanding the assignment to organizing ideas and revising drafts. Writing consultants are trained to help students identify areas for improvement and advise them how to make those improvements most effectively.

Additional Services

The Writing Center offers a range of additional resources for students, including citation style guides, grammar handbooks, and information on writing specific types of documents. We also offer workshops and presentations on specific writing-related topics, including writer's block and covers letters.

Writing Center facilities and services are available to all Missouri S&T students free of charge. The writing center is located on the third floor of the library. Consultation hours are posted on our website at http://writingcenter.mst.edu. We now offer face-to-face/in-person, online remote, and asynchronous consultation services. Students are encouraged to use our online scheduling tool to make appointments.  You can also reach out by email at writing@mst.edu or by phone at (573) 341-4436.
