About the Campus

Founded in 1870 as a product of the land-grant movement during the height of the Industrial Revolution, our university - then known as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, or MSM - was Missouri's response to the acute need for scientific and practical education in the developing nation. Early academic programs focused on the mining and metallurgical industries, but the campus expanded its mission over time as the need for a broad-based education grew.

As the campus placed a greater emphasis on research and graduate education and increased its academic offerings, its identity evolved to reflect these changes.

In 1964, the four-campus University of Missouri System was established, and our campus became known as the University of Missouri-Rolla or UMR. In 2008, the name was changed to Missouri University of Science and Technology, or informally as Missouri S&T, to reflect our distinctive nature as a national research university.

Today, Missouri S&T is in its second 150 years building upon its heritage of discovery, creativity and innovation to inspire and prepare students of all majors to pursue and solve the world's great challenges.

Missouri S&T offers bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in 31 fields of study, including engineering, science, humanities, business, education, and the social sciences. Master of science degrees are offered in 32 disciplines, the doctor of philosophy in 21 and the doctor of engineering in eight.

Missouri S&T has become a research university of national distinction, and world-changing research happens every day in our laboratories. The campus is home to more than 50 research and academic support centers. In fiscal year 2022, our faculty researchers received 404 funding. Missouri S&T continues to enhance its research activity through interdisciplinary collaborations of national significance.

Housed on a 284-acre campus in Rolla, Missouri, a town of over 20,000 in the heart of the Ozarks, Missouri S&T enrolls over 7,000 students from 48 states and 65 countries. More than 70 percent of students pursue degrees in engineering, science or computer fields, but Missouri S&T also offers liberal arts, humanities, physical and social sciences, business, and education degrees.

Missouri S&T is consistently ranked among the nation's best public universities when it comes to return on investment and career opportunities. The campus community has an entrepreneurial spirit and an innovation-oriented culture that makes any student successful in any career.

Over 4,600 different employers, including many of the world's top companies, actively recruit S&T graduates each year. The most recent data available shows that the average starting salary for an S&T graduate is $72,600 which is the highest average starting salary among Missouri.

Campus Life

Missouri S&T offers a variety of campus living options, including fraternity and sorority houses, traditional residence halls, the residential college, and university commons. With over 250 student organizations, there is a place for everyone at Missouri S&T. We have over 20 student design teams, a competitive NCAA Division II athletic program, student professional societies, a student radio station, and theater and music programs. Each year, Missouri S&T students help to organize one of the largest St. Pat's celebrations in the nation.

University of Missouri System Structure and History

The four University of Missouri System campuses are located in Rolla, Columbia, Kansas City and St. Louis. Governing these campuses is the Board of Curators, whose members are appointed by the governor of Missouri and confirmed by the Missouri Senate.

The president of the University of Missouri System directs and coordinates programs of all four campuses with assistance from staff in finance, business management, academic affairs, research, extension, human resources, university relations, and other university services. The activities of each campus are under the supervision of a chancellor, who directs campus affairs within policies established by the UM System Board of Curators and the president.

The UM System has a long and proud history. The first campus was established at Columbia in 1839, only 18 years after Missouri became a state. A land-grant university, the UM System is recognized as the first state university west of the Mississippi River. The university remained a single-campus institution until 1870 when the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (Missouri S&T’s former designation) was established at Rolla. Campuses at St. Louis and Kansas City were added in 1963. On July 1, 1964, the UM System Board of Curators renamed the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy to the University of Missouri-Rolla.

Missouri University of Science and Technology

On January 1, 2008, the University of Missouri-Rolla became Missouri University of Science and Technology, or Missouri S&T. Our new name has helped us gain broader national recognition and gives us an identity that fits our mission as a leading technological research university.

Various state and federal laws, specifically the Higher Education Opportunity Act, require Missouri University of Science and Technology to provide information and notice to students on a variety of topics.
